Usually when the weather cools down insects start to disappear, but for one small bug it's prime season.
Fall and spring are the times of year the deer tick comes out, putting dogs at risk for Lyme disease.
Deer ticks are smaller than wood ticks and dark brown.
A veterinarian at the Oakwood Hills Animal Hospital says if your dog picks up a deer tick, grab the tick next to the skin and pull straight out.
But she says the best fight against ticks is prevention and doing things like having your pet get vaccinated for Lyme’s and also use on the spot product, like a flea and tick collar.
Vets say always do a tick check after your dog has been outside, and they say if your dog starts to limp, loose its appetite, and act tired, call your vet right away.
