Hmong Debate How to Spread Respect

Hmong hunters could gain legitimacy by joining outdoor groups.

That's the mesage from the Wisconsin Governor's Task Force on Hmong Resettlement.

Governor Jim Doyle appointed the task force to help the state cope with 3,000 new Hmong refugees expected to arive by spring.

The group's meeting yesterday was its first since the hunter slayings in Sawyer County last month.

The task force tried to brainstorm ways Hmong hunters can regain respect.

Chai Vang, a Hmong resident from St. Paul, was charged with gunning down six hunters and wounding two more in the Sawyer County shootings.

The incident has touched off racial tensions in Northern Wisconsin.
