Madison Raises Minimum Wage; Faces Lawsuit-State Rate Remains Same

The minimum wage in Madison will be 55 cents higher than elsewhere in Wisconsin beginning Saturday.

A lawsuit by some of the state's biggest business groups seeks to change that. Both sides have until today to file briefs in Dane County Circuit Court.

A hearing is scheduled January fifth.

Wisconsin hasn't increased the minimum wage since it rose to $5.15 an hour in September of 1997. So the city of Madison decided to take matters into its own hands and boost its minimum wage to $5.70 an hour beginning January first. It would jump to $6.50 an hour a year later and $7.25 after that.

Several business groups, including the Wisconsin Restaurant Association, say the city can't raise the minimum wage independent of the rest of the state.
