Gun deer hunting license sales are slightly ahead of last year. The Department of Natural Resources offices report sales running about two percent ahead of last year.
The DNR says, however, that about 150,000 more licenses must be sold in order to equal the record number sold in 2000, the year before chronic wasting disease was discovered in Wisconsin.
So far about 542,000 licenses have been sold. The DNR says this year's deer population is about 1.7 million, and roughly 600,000 deer are taken in the annual gun harvest.
