Lee is buying Pulitzer's newspaper holdings in a deal worth nearly one and a-half billion dollars. That includes 14 daily newspapers including The Daily News of Rhinelander.

The acquisition makes the Lee chain fourth in numbers of American daily newspapers and seventh in circulation with 58 daily newspapers in 23 states.

In Wisconsin, Lee Enterprises publishes the La Crosse Tribune, The Journal Times of Racine and The Chippewa Herald. It also has half ownership in Capital Newspapers, which publishes the Wisconsin State Journal, The Capital Times, Portage Daily Register, Baraboo News Republic, Daily Citizen in Beaver Dam and Shawano Leader.
