Plea Entered for Man Accused of Killing Boy

Kevin Rood, 41, of Hammond is accused of beating Stephan Hubbard, 8, to death because the child lied about wetting his pants.

Rood claimed the boy collapsed on his own while taking a shower, but a medical examiner said the boy had 50 to 60 bruises and cuts on his body indicative of a beating. Hubbard also had multiple spinal fractures.

Rood was arraigned in a Hudson courtroom on Tuesday. He stood mute and Judge Scott Needham entered a "not guilty" plea on his behalf. Rood faces one count of first degree reckless homicide and three counts of child abuse with the intent to cause great harm. A status conference has been scheduled for the end of March. Rood remains in jail on $500,000 bond.
