A Cashton woman and her four children are safe after an off-duty firefighter broke down the door to their burning home and set them free.
Cashton is south of Sparta in Monroe County.
Off-duty firefighter Dave Hundt stopped at a convenience store on his way to work early Tuesday morning when another customer reported the blaze.
Hundt told the clerk to call 9-1-1 and rushed over to the house. He saw flames shooting from the roof but couldn't open the front door.
The door was blocked with remodeling materials. After he yelled at the women to clear the way, he broke it down with his shoulder.
Jenny McGinnis says she's thankful that her children got out alive. She says their clothes are replaceable but her children are not.
