Snowmobile Through Ice

JEFFERSON, Wis. (AP) -- The body of the second victim of a weekend incident in which a snowmobile fell through ice on the Rock River is recovered.

Authorities say the body of 40-year-old Gerard Debaets of Watertown was found today in the river in the town of Aztalan. Thirty-six-year-old Wendy Heiman of Watertown was recovered after the incident Saturday evening and pronounced dead at Watertown Memorial Hospital.

The Johnson Creek Fire Department says a third snowmobile operator, 39-year-old Brian Nimm of Watertown, was also at the scene.

Department of Natural Resources warden David Walz says Nimm initially broke through the ice, and his vehicle sank, but he was able to get out of the water.

Walz says the other two stopped and got on the same machine. The warden says that, instead of getting off the ice, they continued toward a spot where the river bank wasn't so steep, and then they broke through the ice.
