Final Numbers For 2003

The numbers are in.

Wisconsin's whooping cough cases hit a record high last year. And officials say the cases in the state made up of a quarter of the nation's total.

State health officials report 5,162 confirmed and probably cases in Wisconsin last year. That's more than seven times the number of 2003, when the outbreak first took hold.

Two infants died from whooping cough in the state last year.

Jeffrey Davis is the chief medical officer for communicable diseases in the Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services.

He says doctors should remain on alert for a possible continuation of the outbreak this year.

Children generally are hardest hit by the bacterial infection.
