DNR: Increases Will Help

In an effort to bring on 30 more conservation wardens during the next two years, Governor Doyle is proposing to raise the state's annual hunting fees from 20 to 30 dollars, and fishing licenses from 17 to 20 dollars.

It's part of the budget bill he'll submit tomorrow.

Local DNR officials say they don't think the increases could take effect before the spring of 2006, but they're also glad to see it on the horizon.

"This is something we very much need in order to continue to operate our hunting and fishing programs and law enforcement to the extent that we need to," said Scott Humrickhouse, Director of the DNR's West Central Region.

Officials don't expect the increases to result in a drop in licensing, saying the increase will put Wisconsin's price in line with other states, and that $32 for a hunting license is equivalent to what hunters paid in the 1960's when you factor in inflation.
