La Crosse Pigeons Have A Friend In the Mayor

The mayor of La Crosse says even pigeons have a place there.

Mayor John Medinger has vetoed a ban on pigeons the common council passed last week.

Medinger says the exemptions in the ban that would let residents keep existing pigeon lofts are just a smoke screen. He says pigeon owners would have to jump through too many hoops to keep their pigeons.

The mayor says domestic pigeons have been legal and part of the city's neighborhoods for decades. He says the council should appoint a "balanced and fair committee" to discuss the issue.

The council could override the mayor's veto with a two-thirds vote of the whole board.

There's no word on pigeons in public would be ticketed under the ban.
