The State Patrol says I-90-94 is now closed in both directions between Madison and Mauston. That's a 75-mile stretch and a major connecting point for drivers headed from western Wisconsin to Milwaukee and Chicago.

The state closed the roads early Friday morning because of rising water in the area. People driving between the Twin Cities and Chicago should take I-94 to Highway 29, take Highway 29 across the state to Green Bay, then take I-43 south until it meets up with I-94 again at Milwaukee.

A stretch of i-39 south north of portage is also closed, and so is I-94 west near Johnson Creek. Governor Jim Doyle says he should be ready to ask President Bush to declare a federal disaster late Friday or Saturday.

Authorities are encouraging people in storm areas to stay off the roads, at least until officials determine whether travel can be done safely. That's because flooding has caused widespread standing water, washouts and other hazards. Those concerns have been raised from the southwest corner of the state all the way to the Fond du Lac and Oshkosh areas in the east.
