A financial incentive may lead cigarette smokers in Wisconsin to consider quitting.

Starting Tuesday, a $1.00 a pack increase goes into effect throughout Wisconsin.

Eau Claire County Health Director Richard Thoune said that some of the quickest health improvements happen in the minutes and hours after quitting.

Yet there is also this effect on tobacco quit lines in states where the cigarette taxes go up.

"Eau Claire City & County Health Director Richard Thoune says, “The number of calls to quit lines goes up anywhere between two and ten times in the days of a similar rise in price."

With the increase, a full $1.77 in state taxes will come from the purchase of a pack of cigarettes in Wisconsin.
