Kids and Cops Program Helps Local Kids

Reserve officers from the Eau Claire County Sheriff's Department are making sure dozens of local kids will enjoy their winter holidays even though their parents may have fallen upon hard times.

About 85-kids were bussed into Super Target in Eau Claire for their annual Kids and Cops program. They're paired up with the officers for some shopping, primarily for things the kids' parents say they need the most.

The officers volunteer their free time to shop with the kids.

"100 percent of the funds that are raised from the community, groups and individuals, goes directly to the shopping," said Captain Ken Berg of the Sheriff's Office.

"There's no overhead costs at all."

The kids who shopped today were referred by service agencies, churches and schools.

This is the 13th year for the program, and even store security workers love it, saying most people think twice about shoplifting with so many officers around.
