Student Makes Bond Request

An Independence high school student has been in jail since he took a fire truck for a joy ride last week, but in court Monday afternoon, said he wanted to get out of jail to return to school.

Speaking from the jail, 18-year-old Darrel Abramczak requested he be released on a signature bond so he could return right away for his senior year classes, but Judge John Damon issued a $500 cash bond for the felony charge.

Officials say Abramczak took the Town of Hale's only pumper after being let go from the volunteer department.

Assistant District Attorney William Nemer says in the 26 years he's been a prosecutor he's seen incidents where squad cars were taken for joy rides, but never a fire truck.

The 18-year-old was already on supervision from a misdemeanor theft charge that happened earlier last year.
