At about 11 a.m. Monday morning, a 78-year-old man was trying to get a bucket of salt from a salt pile at the Trempealeau County Highway Shop in Arcadia for use at his home.
Sheriff's officials say the pile gave way and buried the man.
Emergency crews used air bags to get the 78-year-old out.
The highway commissioner says the public should not be going into the county's highway buildings. He says it's not their policy to allow residents to get salt for their own use.
