The city of La Crosse is the target of a federal lawsuit filed by the family of a college student who drowned in the Mississippi River.

Jared Dion attended the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse when he disappeared after going drinking in downtown La Crosse last April.

The body of the 21-year-old from the Waukesha County town of Merton was found in the river five days later.

The family filed suit this week in U-S District Court at Madison. The family claims the city fostered a culture of binge drinking ... and that's what led to the death.

City officials say they'll fight the lawsuit. They say they've taken steps to address the concerns about excessive drinking.
