The Department of Housing and Urban Development has awarded a grant to Lutheran Social Services of Eau Claire to build apartments for developmentally disabled adults.
The agency says many developmentally disabled adults live with other family members or in rundown apartments.
Research from the Eau Claire County Department of Human Services identified a need for low income, handicap accessible housing.
The grant of more than $600,000 will be used to build an eight unit apartment on Eau Claire's north side.
"(The individuals living there) will probably have some assistance from time to time to help them," says Ted Hakala. "Public transport will be available to them, but for the most part, they will be able to live independently."
The complex will be located on the corner of Jeffers and Truax. Harkala says they are planning to break ground in the spring.
