Families with children in college would get a bigger tuition tax break under a plan proposed by Governor Jim Doyle in his State of the State speech Wednesday night.

The plan would raise the state income tax deduction for college tuition from three-housand dollars to about five-thousand dollars. That means it would be raised to cover the average cost of tuition in the University of Wisconsin System.

Doyle says he'll include the proposal in the budget he sends to the Legislature next month.

Stephanie Hilton of the United Council of U-W Students says it's encouraging that Doyle is thinking about the increased cost of higher education.

But she says the plan is geared to middle- and high-income families and wouldn't do much to help low-income students who find it increasingly difficult to afford college.
