Hunger Strike Ended

A three day hunger strike by UW system students protesting tuition increases has ended and they're claiming victory that there are now two tuition cap proposals in the legislature.

One, sponsored by Assemblymen Frank Boyle (D) from Superior and Mark Pocan (D) from Madison.

A bi-partisan effort authored by Rep. Rob Kreibich (R) and co-sponsored by Barb Gronemus (D), Jeff Wood (R), Dave Zien (R) and others would cap tuition at three percent.

The students were protesting proposed tuition increases in the upcoming state budget, which could raise costs up to fourteen percent over the next two years.

Organizers call their effort successful. "The best thing would be if we got the freeze but if it came down to it and we were only able to get a 3% cap, we would still see that as a victory," says Andrew Werthmann.

A public listening session has been scheduled for March 28 from 4:00-6 p.m. on UW-Eau Claire's campus.
