Even though Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast more than two years ago, some people are still working to rebuild their homes and their lives.
Yet, they’re about to get some extra help from a group of local university students.
Ten UW-Stout students will head south for the special service trip. And the place they’re headed is sure to get the attention of all you Packers fans.
UW-Stout senior, Erin Wood, is about to provide hurricane help for the second time in her college career.
"We're basically going to be doing dry walling, tiling and painting,” Wood said. “Just basically anything that needs to be done to help them finish up their houses."
Advisor, Mary McManus, says Erin is the group leader for this trip and has been responsible for all the planning. Being that she went to the same area last year, Erin says she’s excited to see just how much things have changed.
"Some houses look completely put together, the grass is growing and everything is brand-new like nothing every happened,” Wood remembered. “And then, their neighbor either isn't coming back at all or they're back but they're still living in a trailer and stuff like that."
"It's obviously going to be very different experience from living in Dunn County and I think that helps too,” added McManus. “It prepares our students to go out into the workforce and other communities around the world."
But, what makes this trip special is where the group is headed. Just like last year, Erin and her fellow students will say in the Camp Coastal Volunteer Camp, which is right outside Brett Favre’s hometown of Kiln, Mississippi.
"He actually sent his wife over with some autographed hats and things and we got to talk to her and talk to him on speaker phone, which was pretty amazing,” Wood said.
"Hopefully they will not meet Brett Favre and that he'll still be in camp and still playing through the season, all the way through to the Super Bowl,” McManus added.
The students will start driving to the Gulf Coast Saturday morning, with plans to arrive my mid-Sunday. They’ll be at Camp Coastal until next Friday.
