Fort McCoy Claims Large Economic Impact

Businesses around Fort McCoy benefited more last year than in 2003 from the military base.

According to base officials, the total economic impact for last year was around 780-million dollars. That's up by more than 150-million dollars from 2003.

But the news comes at a time when Fort McCoy's future is in question.

The U-S Government is looking at closing or realigning military bases across the country as a cost-savings measure.

A commission will make a recommendation to the White House this fall.

Governor Jim Doyle is fighting to keep Fort McCoy and Wisconsin's other four military bases open.
