The Vatican says reports of Pope John Paul's death are false. But a senior official is suggesting that his death is imminent.
An Italian news agency had reported that a brain monitor hooked to the pope had gone flat. But a senior Vatican official says the pope is still alive. And he tells The Associated Press that there is no such monitoring device in the pope's apartment.
The pope's condition remains serious, however. He's suffering from blood poisoning from a urinary tract infection. The Vatican says his breathing is shallow and his heart and kidneys are said to be failing.
Earlier reports on the pope's health described him as deteriorating, but still participating in prayers with aides gathered at his bedside.
