147 Wis. Army National Guard soldiers back in U.S.

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. (AP) -- Nearly 150 Wisconsin soldiers are back on U.S. soil after serving nine months in Afghanistan.

The soldiers are members of the Wisconsin Army National Guard's 229th Engineer Company. The unit is based in Prairie Du Chien.

They arrived in Fort Bliss, Texas, on Sunday. They're going through the demobilization process, and they're expected to be back in Wisconsin in the next few weeks.

The 229th is credited with helping improve U.S. troop mobility in Kandahar Province. The 147 members were responsible for building and improving roads and helicopter pads. They also helped improve bases and combat outposts.

The company conducted 586 missions and earned 23 Combat Action Badges.

As civilians, many members of the 229th work in industries such as construction, carpentry and mechanical engineering.
