Deadly Police Shoot-Out in Spooner

A Washburn County man is dead after a shoot-out with police in Spooner.

Just before 2am Saturday, two Spooner police officers responded to a call about a man looking into vehicles in a parking lot at 812 Elm Drive.

When they approached the man, who was sitting in his van, the officers say he came out pointing a rifle at them.

They reportedly exchanged fire and the officers called for back-up.

Once the scene was secure, police found Phillip C. Metzig, 72, dead lying outside his van

According to the Washburn County Sheriff, the two officers are on administrative leave, as required by department policy.

The shooting remains under investigation.
