Arbor Day

For the past 26 years, the city of Eau Claire has been recognized by the National Arbor Day Foundation as a "Tree City, USA."

It's an annual award recognizing the city's dedication to preserving green space.

"It's a real tribute to the city of Eau Claire, its citizens, its leadership and the value they place on the urban forest and quality of life issues that go along with beautifying the community," says Todd Chwala, the city's forester.

Another aspect to the award is Arbor Day programs. Although the last Friday in April is the official holiday in Wisconsin, Chwala and other members of the department made presentations all week to more than 700 schoolchildren.

In addition to learning about trees, the students were also able to help plant trees at their schools.
