Sport fishing rakes in an estimated $2.3 billion dollars annually in Wisconsin. With the opening to this years fishing season Saturday, the DNR is cautioning anglers about the potential health risks of consuming too much of their catch.
Mercury poisoning can hinder brain development in children. Women who are planning to become or are pregnant should also limit their intake for the same reason. Too much mercury in men can increase the risk of heart disease.
As a general rule, the larger the fish, the more they could potentially contain. "Fish are safe to eat and they're good for you," says regional fisheries biologist Mark Endris. " But they do contain mercury so you have to limit your comsumption depending on who you are, how old you are, that type of thing."
