Concealed Weapons for Law Enforcement

Republican lawmakers are encouraging current and former Wisconsin police to implement a federal law that allows them to carry concealed weapons.

Eau Claire police are able to carry weapons while they are off duty.

Lieutenant Karl Fisher says besides personal protection for officers, it could also be a benefit to have more trained law enforcement in the community.

But the law doesn't protect against liability while off-duty.

"Once I leave here, I'm not acting on the scope of my employment. I'm on my own, so if there should be lawsuits or I have to defend myself, I have to get my own lawyer."

While Lt. Fisher says he supports the law, he says there are a number of issues that need to be worked out before it can be effective.
