The Trempealeau County Health Department says a two-year-old girl died Thursday from Meningococcal disease and they want people to be aware.
Ruth Piontok, a nurse for the health department, says the two-year-old girl from Whitehall was initially treated at a hospital there on Wednesday and then taken to Gunderson Lutheran in La Crosse. She died last night.
Piontok says the girl was not in a daycare, and the county is still waiting on lab results to make a final determination on her cause of death.
Meningococcal disease is a rare but often serious bacterial infection.
