MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A 30-year-old Madison murder mystery is solved.
Prosecutors have told a judge that Eugene Zapata has confessed to killing his wife Jeanette in 1976.
They say Zapata confessed in exchange for a reduced charge of reckless homicide. He pleaded guilty to that count Monday.
Dane County Judge Patrick Fiedler sentenced Zapata to five years in prison, the maximum sentence for reckless homicide in 1976.
Fiedler says the important thing is everyone now knows what happened to Jeanette.
Zapata stood trial on a count of first-degree murder last fall, but the proceeding ended with a hung jury.
