An Altoona man accused of beating his wife repeatedly with a hammer is being held in Eau Claire county jail on a $500,000 cash bond.
Thirty-two-year-old Roberto Rios made his initial appearance in Eau Claire County Court Monday morning.
He's charged with attempted homicide, felony intimidation of a victim, and repeated domestic abuse and substantial battery.
Police say on May 4, Rios hit his wife repeatedly on the head with a hammer, and pulled the phones out of the wall to prevent her from calling police.
Rios was later arrested for drunk driving in Iowa, and was brought back to Wisconsin late last week.
He's expected back in court next week.
