An Eau Claire elementary school is receiving recognition for its efforts to encourage environmental learning and practices.
Lakeshore Elementary has been working throughout the school year to become a "green and healthy" school.
In addition to assessments of different school functions like energy use, waste and recycling, a group of fifth graders has made presentations to other classes about being good stewards of the environment.
"The younger we start getting people to think about this, the more chance we'll have success in the long run in terms of taking care of our planet," says Ellen Higley, the school social worker who spearheaded the effort to start the program.
"Green and Healthy" started last year through a partnership between the state's department of natural resources and department of public instruction.
