Xcel Energy Seeking Rate Increase

If you're an Xcel Energy customer, it may soon be getting more expensive to flip on the light or turn on the TV

Xcel filed an application today with the public service commission to increase electric rates.

The request would boost basic electric rates by thirteen percent or roughly eight dollars a month for the average residential customer.

The company says the hike is needed to meet growing demand and to maintain and improve several aging facilities built in the 1960's and 1970's.

"At this point we need to make investments in the physical systems to meet customer needs so that's what we're looking at going forward," said Donald Reck, Director of Regulatory Affairs for Xcel.

One of the improvements the rate hike would pay for is maintenance of the major transmission line serving Eau Claire.
