Embryonic Stem Cell Research Funding

President Bush is threatening his first veto on the bill the house passed Tuesday to increase funding of embryonic stem cell research.

The president has the backing from groups like Wisconsin Right to Life, who say taxpayers shouldn't have to fund the destruction of human life. "There is not a single patient in the entire world that has been helped by an embryonic stem cell simply because it's too dangerous to put those cells into a human being at this time," says Barbara Lyons, the group's director.

But supporters like Sharon McIquham believe research could mean a cure for her daughter, who has type one diabetes, or people like her father, who suffered from Parkinson's.

"I really don't see how it could possibly hurt anyone," says McIlquham. If they're well-informed, they'll realize stem cell research can be conducted taking into account all the various emotional issues that are involved."

Opponents did support another bill passed by the house Tuesday that would fund research using stem cells from umbilicord blood.
