La Crosse State Senator's Wife Arrested

Authorities say a state senator's wife was arrested Thursday on allegations she stole painkillers from a friend.

Dan Kapanke's wife, Ruth, was arrested after meeting with sheriff's investigators.

La Crosse County District Attorney Scott Horne says Ruth Kapanke developed an addiction to painkillers while she was taking them for back pain.

Trempealeau County's district attorney has agreed to act as a special prosecutor in the case. Horne says he's good friends with Dan Kapanke and he wants to avoid any appearance of a conflict of interest.

Kapanke is a Republican who represents a La Crosse-area senate district. He is also the owner of the Northwoods League La Crosse Loggers baseball team.

He says he and his wife have already contacted her family doctor as she seeks help, and that's a step in the right direction.
