Could a 65 Cent Piece of Plastic Have Saved Two Students' Lives?
A year ago, a semi tire flew off the truck, crashed through the windshield of a van, killed two students and devastated a campus: Now some people say that could have been prevented.

Wheels go from tight to loose very quickly, a few hundred miles. Looseness indicators like "wheel check" will not be looked at in this amount of time. There is a new product on the market called Pacnut made by ITW that helps keep the wheels tight. They are not just an indicator.

Regarding the prevous comment: the problem with your suggestion is that it can wash off...do you not think that it is worth using something a little more concrete when talking about human lives..its not like they are expensive.

Ms Rinzel: You do not even need the plastic indicators. All you need to do is put a dot of emamel paint on the lug nut right where the nut meets the wheel. Very simple. We have acually used white or black permenent marker pens in a pinch. Also if a lug nut is loose it will "bleed" a line of rust that comes out around the nut. This should have been taught to every driver on the road. Have a good day... Mark
