HEAT WAVE 2012: It's Hot, Hot, Hot, another record high possible today

WEAU - Our July heatwave continues, and today will likely make it 7 in a row day at 90 degrees or above. Records for today are as follows.. Eau Claire, 99, set in 1948, and La Crosse, 101, set in 1874. Both have a chance at being tied, with La Crosse likely to break this incredibly long standing record. The stretch of heat though not unprecedented, is very unusual for this part of the country. An upper level ridge poised across the central part of the nation is to blame, and it will move little over the next few days. Indications are however the northern fringe of this high will begin to shift further south, as an upper trough swings a bit further south from Canada to our east. This will bring a welcome change to this pattern by the weekend.

A cold front will slowly push through from the north, but temperatures wont see much of an impact until tomorrow and more noticeably over the weekend. This will also bring our best chance at seeing some needed rainfall after this excessive heat, in the form of showers and thunderstorms. Most gardens and lawns could use a nice drink of water. The 7-day forecast after Saturday does not include many rain chances.

As always when dealing with high heat and humidity, follow these guidelines when spending time outdoors the next few days. Drink plenty of fluids, preferably water, wear light weight, light colored clothing, since dark colors draw heat.. if possible, minimize your time spent outdoors, and take frequent breaks. Also, don't forget about your pets, and other animals. Fresh food, and plenty of water will be needed.
