Budget Proposal

The state's two-year budget has passed in the Assembly, but the plan still faces roadblocks before it can become law.

Fiscal conservatives in the state Senate want deeper spending cuts to the state's 53 billion dollar budget plan, and Governor Doyle says he could veto the entire thing if it doesn't give more money for schools.

The Assembly voted 56-to-40 early today to approve the plan.

The plan includes increases in hunting and fishing fees, a property tax freeze that should save average homeowners eleven dollars every year, and 458 million dollars in new spending for public schools.

Doyle and other Democrats say that's not enough to cover rising costs, and will result in teacher layoffs.
