Eau Claire Assemblyman Wants UW Official Fired

Lawmakers plan to ask University of Wisconsin Board of Regents today to fire a top administrator at U-W-Madison who collected his salary during seven months of paid leave.

Lawmakers were outraged earlier this month when they learned Paul Barrows, the former vice chancellor of student affairs at UW-Madison, was a finalist for a job at the University of Texas at Austin.

He had been on medical leave since November and was getting his nearly $192,000 salary.

Eau Claire Republican Representative Rob Kreibich says he and other lawmakers will file a legislative appeal today to the regents, which is the governing body of the UW System, asking that Barrows be fired immediately.

Barrows returned to work Monday with reduced duties and a lower salary at $150,000 a year.

Barrow's lawyer, Lester Pines, says his client has done nothing wrong and legislators are overreacting.
