BUFFALO CITY, Wis. (AP) -- A 35-year-old woman has died in an apparent Mississippi River drowning near Buffalo City.
Sheriff Mike Schmidtknecht says the woman had been on a sandbar about 7 p.m., walking in deep water, when she either went off a ledge or was swept under by currents.
KAGE reports the woman's body was found a short distance downstream about 90 minutes later. She was identified as Tammy Lorenz of Buffalo City.

ALMA, Wis. (WEAU) - The Buffalo County Sheriff's Department says the body of a 35-year old drowning victim has been recovered out of the Mississippi River near Buffalo City.
Deputies say they received a call just before 7 Wednesday evening that a woman had gone underwater on a sand bar, near what is known as Belvidere Landing, and never resurfaced.
Witnesses say the woman was walking in deep water when she either went off a steep ledge or was swept under by currents. The victim was not wearing a life vest.
Rescuers began a search for her, and around 8:30 p.m., recovered her body about 150 yards downstream from where the woman had last been seen.
The name of the victim has not been released.
