Chief: Hammond Cleanup Must Be OK'd by Gas Company

The 24 families from Hammond who were affected by Saturday's tornado were able to leave their hotels today and survey some of the damage, but aren't allowed to do much in the way of cleaning up.

A village station chief says the gas company has to give them the go-ahead first, which will probably be Monday. Many families in an area townhome complex could move valuables to temporary housing while the full picture of damage is tallied.

"The bedroom's cracked in...walls are all shifted...plaster's all over everything like, ya know, the TV and stuff," said storm victim Paul Peterson.

County officials estimate the damage to be 3.6 million dollars. Despite that, no injuries were reported. The tornado touched down Saturday afternoon, tearing a 100-foot wide, five to six mile long path, mostly through farm fields
