Wisconsin Seat Belt Use Rises

Wisconsin motorists stopped recently for failing to wear safety belts weren't alone.

State transportation officials say just under eleven-thousand of those citations were issued during a recent campaign aimed at increasing awareness of seatbelt safety. Also, there were 262 citation issued for not using child passenger restraints.

Transportation Secretary Frank Busalacchi says a survey found last year that safety belt use in Wisconsin reached an all-time high of 72 percent, but that's still below the national average of 80 percent.

He says people seem to feel it infringes on their rights to require seatbelt use, even though studies show half the people killed in traffic accidents while not wearing safety belts would have survived if they wore them.

The campaign ran from May 23rd to June fifth and involved local police, sheriff's deputies and state troopers.
