Wisconsin's Apostle Islands Dedicated To Gaylord Nelson

A wilderness area at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore will be dedicated to former governor and environmental crusader Gaylord Nelson Monday.

Governor Doyle and Nelson's daughter, Tia, will be on hand for the dedication in northwestern Wisconsin.

The longtime Democratic senator from Wisconsin and Earth Day founder died July third at age 89.

Doyle urged that the wilderness area be named for Nelson. Federal legislation was signed in 2004 to establish the wilderness area and name it for Nelson.

The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore was established in 1970 and includes 22 islands and shoreline areas on Lake Superior in Bayfield County. Then-Senator Nelson was the author of the legislation creating the National Lakeshore.
