Silver Anniversary for NYSP

The National Youth Sports Program celebrated 25 years in Eau Claire Thursday, but organizers are concerned that an end to federal funding for the program would mean it's the final anniversary.

Last year, the federal budget allotted $18 million for the more than 200 sites of the program. This year, the funding has been eliminated.

Eau Claire's program director says the five weeks at camp are a benefit to the community, but also to the 600 kids in attendance.

"This is an all encompassing camp. They're bused here in the morning, there's five activity periods throughout the day, sport components as well as educational components. They get the full gamut of things," says Lisa Schuetz.

Organizers estimate that more than 10,000 kids between the ages of 10-16 have participated in the program since it first began on UW-Eau Claire's campus.
