The people who live on River Road near Downsville say life is usually low key, but on Wednesday and Thursday night, their mailboxes were destroyed.
"They've been smashing them pretty soundly and pretty, pretty bad,” said Dunn County Sheriff Dennis Smith.
Smith says he thinks a few people smashed close to 75 mailboxes each night, frustrating the victims.
"It costs a lot of money to buy a new mailbox and put a new post in and all that,” said Andrew Rabideau.
"I'm not really mad, just disgusted. I don't really understand why people do things like that,” said Wallace Cutler.
Smith says it will cost at least $2,500 to replace all the mailboxes, something some victims aren't ready to do.
"I would like to catch them first, then prosecute and have them pay damages some how,” said Rabideau.
Sheriff Smith says the suspects face criminal property damage charges if deputies catch them, which they have yet to do.
"We're gonna just hopefully see if we can come up with a person of possibility and go from there,” Smith said.
He says that's why it's important to call the police as soon as possible if you see a crime happen.
"If they could call us and report it right away, that's a key because sometimes we're right next door to where it happened,” he said.
Smith says deputies put notices in all the damaged mailboxes so they can better understand what happened.
Although some of the victims think they know why it did.
"It's spring break time and the kids were out partying and they had to have something to do when the party broke up,” said Cutler.
"They don't seem to be too cautious about it. They're just going out there and getting at it you know,” said Smith.
