U-W EAU CLAIRE HAS SOMETHING THAT VERY FEW UNDGRADUATE COLLEGES HAVE...AND..EVEN IF YOU DON'T APPRECIATE THE SCIENCES..YOU'LL APPRECIATE THIS.
IT'S A PLASMA MASS SPECTROMETER.
THE MACHINE WILL ALLOW STUDENTS AND PROFESSORS TO FIND TRACE ELEMENTS IN WATER, SOIL, AND ROCKS TO THE NEAREST PART PER *QUADRILLION*....FOR EXAMPLE..HELPING TO DETECT ARSENIC IN THE WATER SUPPLY
A PART PER QUADRILLION WOULD BE SIMILIEAR TO LESS THAN ONE DROP OF WATER IN AN OLYMIC SIZED SWIMMING POOL.
THE UNIVERSITY WILL USE THE MACHINE TO CONDUCT RESEARCH FROM GREENLAND TO IDAHO.
Robert Hooper - "This instrument for the first time allows us to analysis less abundant elements at trace concentrations. The strength of U-W Eau Claire is the ability to put students on intruments that they'd be using graduate programs across the country. I believe this is the first one that has been installed in a non-graduate institution."
THE MACHINE WILL BE FULLY OPERATIONAL BY THIS FALL...AND PRIVATE INDUSTRY WILL ALSO BE ABLE TO UTILIZE IT.
