Public Hearing On Proposed Shoreland Rules

Tuesday, at the Chippewa Valley Technical College in Eau Claire, those opinions were being heard in the first of eleven public hearings in the state.

People argued the proposal has been a long time coming and they made it clear some of Wisconsin's lakes and rivers have eroding shorelines and are losing fish and wildlife habitat. At the hearing people said those are the things that need to be restored first. The new proposed zoning standards will have some flexibility for property owners, and some issues will be regulated by towns and counties.

Toni Herkert, spokesperson for the DNR, said the responsibility really falls on land owners. "It really all falls on the property owner, we're allowing them to do more, but that is in exchange for the protection of the environment."

There will be ten more meetings throughout the state over the next couple of months, the next one closest to Eau Claire is in LaCrosse on July 19th.
