How Over the Counter Painkillers Affect Women

Researchers followed more than 5,000 women who took a daily dose of aspirin, ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

The study found that those who took acetaminophen, the equivalent of one extra strength Tylenol, doubled their risk of developing high blood pressure within three years. Ibuprofen also elevated their risk.

An area nurse practitioner says the study was surprising and can carry significant consequences.

"These medications can still be very safe and very effective," says Ben Anderson.

"However, it's important if you're using them on a daily basis for an extended period of time that you share that information with your healthcare provider."

The findings of the study were published in the American Heart Association's online journal Hypertension.
