Eau Claire District Trumps State Percentage for Good Reading

Administrators say since 91% of the kids are reading at proficient or advanced levels, it stands to reason that those kids are improving in other areas too.

Still, more of the younger kids in the district will be expected to reach these levels when they hit eighth grade, thanks to the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

"I'd like to think that there isn't a student out there, given the right kind of instruction, that we can't bring up at least to the proficient level," said Tony Beardsley

He hopes that by paying special attention to minority and low income students, 100% of their eighth graders will be at proficient or advanced reading levels when the No Child Left Behind legislation is scheduled to expire in 2013.
