YMCA Safety Day

A nine-year-old Chippewa Falls boy remains in stable condition in a Minneapolis hospital after nearly drowning Monday. Tuesday, a 60-year-old Eau Claire man crashed his truck into a Menomonie Street home. He remains at Luther Hospital in critical condition.

On Wednesday, members of the community got a lesson from personnel who respond to those situations. The Eau Claire YMCA held their first annual safety day, giving kids and families the chance to meet emergency response personnel and look over the equipment.

Organizers say teaching safety early helps people to respond quickly in an emergency.

"It's something that seconds count, minutes count as to whether the person lives or dies," says Eau Claire Police Officer Jack Corey.

"Executing the proper safety tools, having the knowledge and the comfort level to do so is really what we're trying to deliver," says Stacey Beck, who organized the event for the YMCA.

Besides Eau Claire Police and Fire and Rescue, there were also people on hand to perform bike and car seat safety checks. There was also a session on water safety in the afternoon.
